Cognitive Style Diversity: The Key to an Excelling Team

As I wrote in my original example, cognitive diversity has been one of my favorite topics so far because I've been in so many situations in which different ways of thinking propelled a group or figured out an issue that the people who thought similarly couldn't. It is described as the diversity that can enable the synthesis of different knowledge bases, perspectives, and opinions necessary to solve difficult problems. Woolley (2010) stated that a team’s collective intelligence is its general ability to work together across a wide range of tasks. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement and think it is the true essence of what this topic is meant to describe to readers. If more people can do more things; you can accomplish the goals set out for the group. I think of it like teams of superheroes from my childhood. Whether it be the Power Rangers, X-Men or others, there were a group of heroes each good at something particular that allowed them to help the group in different way

Throughout the entire unit, I couldn't help but relate the readings to sports because it's such a hobby of mine. I know that when teams are most successful, it starts at the top and works down. That is especially true for the ultimate team game -- football. It's called that, because if one person doesn't know their assignment on a given play, then the entire team fails. This is a learned habit and requires trust amongst coaches and players, which takes time. That is why we often see teams that have been together the longest often succeed at the highest of levels. Except, this year in the NFL was different. This year, a player was able to take a new group and in year one lead them to the ultimate goal, an NFL championship.
